Luis is also a speaker, adjunct professor at Pacific Oaks College in Pasadena, CA, and author of “What About Dad?: Understanding and Addressing Postpartum Depression In Men.” In his clinical practice, Luis specializes in treating men’s mental health issues and trauma. Throughout his nearly 20 year career in mental health, Luis has also developed innovative treatment programs for community based agencies in Los Angeles County including a gardening therapy program and a cognitive remediation therapy program for adults with psychotic or similar disorders.

In this presentation licensed therapist Luis Resendez shares both his personal experience in dealing with postpartum depression after the birth of his first son and insights from current research. The presentation will include information of how postpartum depression affects men, signs and symptoms of the disorder in men, and what could be done to address this as well as connecting new fathers with any support they may need.

Nichole's professional career in midwifery has spanned almost two decades and includes health education consultancy, full-scope midwifery services in private, public and military facilities, and clinical faculty advisory.
Nichole earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from the Medical University of South Carolina, completing her studies in 2005 and received her Docterate in Nursing Practice from Old Dominion University in 2022. She is currently working on her psych mental health nurse practioner certification. Her desire to listen to women was the motivation that led her to midwifery, a specialty she has practiced since 2005.
Seeing herself as a partner in her patients' health care, Nichole is passionate about working with women, individuals, and families to ensure safe and informed care. Her areas of expertise include sexually transmitted disease education/prevention and teen pregnancy, with a special interest in transgender care and perinatal mood disorders. Her passion for her community inspired her to open a home birth practice, Jamii Birth and Wellness Services, to be able to serve her community and work towards creating spaces for clients that want out of hospital birth.

In her free time, she enjoys traveling, knitting and exploring different cultures.Abstract:View Full Presentation InformationUmbilical cord complications are significant factors in obstetric and perinatal outcomes, often leading to increased morbidity and mortality rates. These complications include conditions such as nuchal cord, umbilical cord prolapse, true knots, velamentous cord insertion, and single umbilical artery. Each of these conditions can impede the normal blood flow and oxygen delivery to the fetus, resulting in potential fetal distress, growth restrictions, or stillbirth. In this talk we will discuss management strategies for umbilical cord complications typically focus on early detection through routine prenatal ultrasounds and vigilant monitoring during labor and delivery. For instance, nuchal cords, while often benign, can sometimes necessitate careful intrapartum monitoring or elective cesarean delivery if fetal distress is detected. Umbilical cord prolapse requires immediate medical intervention, usually an emergency cesarean section, to prevent fetal hypoxia. Preventative measures and training for healthcare providers are critical in managing these complications. Effective management protocols, including the timely decision for cesarean sections and interventions like manual reduction or bladder filling for umbilical cord prolapse, have been shown to improve neonatal outcomes. This presentation will allow for a better understanding of the pathophysiology and clinical presentations of these complications to allow for better prenatal counseling and targeted management strategies, ultimately aiming to reduce the risks of adverse perinatal outcomes.

Nicole Morales is a homebirth midwife with a midwifery practice in San Diego, California. After the breech birth of her third baby in 2005, she began a journey to understand more about breech birth alongside advocating for families who were breech in the third trimester. Nicole has taught breech birth at Nizhoni institute of Midwifery, has been in a mentorship with Gail Tully, and continues her work by teaching Breech Basics with her current project called ReStory Birthwork. We will cover how to move with reassurance while also recognizing the importance of timing to help a breech baby. This session provides a brief overview for assisting the surprise breech birth.

Dr. Sinéad Dufour is an academic clinician who shares here time between clinical pursuits as the Director of Pelvic Health at the WOMB and academic pursuits in the Faculty of Health Science at McMaster University.
She has been a practicing physiotherapists for 20 years. She completed her MScPT at McMaster University (2003), her PhD in Health and Rehabilitation Science at Western (2011), and returned to McMaster to complete a post-doctoral fellowship (2014). Her current research interests include: conservative approaches to optimize pelvic floor function, pregnancy-related pelvic-girdle pain, interprofessional collaborative practice models of service provision to enhance pelvic health and perinatal fitness for elite athletes. Sinéad is an active member of several organizations charged with optimizing perinatal care and pelvic health and has led and contributed many national and international clinical practice guidelines to improve care provision. Abstract:View Full Presentation InformationPelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a common condition, it one of the most common pelvic floor dysfunctions (PFD), and denotes one of the three pelvic organs (bladder, uterus, rectum), descending into the vagina. Approximately 40% of women will experience prolapse in their lifetime, with the proportion expected to rise in line with an ageing population. The symptoms associated with POP are often bothersome, including the feeling of 'something coming down' into the vagina, pain, urinary symptoms, bowel symptoms and sexual difficulties. Additionally, the diagnosis of POP often carries a huge degree of fear and worry, a biopsychosocial approach is key. Although POP is not always related to perinatal factors, there are many well established birth related risk factors that have been established. In this session, Dr. Dufour will take you through an updated and in-depth review of proposed mechanisms, prevalence, risk factors and treatment options for pelvic organ prolapse. Integrating the latest research recommendations, international consensus statements and treatment pathways, this session will get you up-to-date so that you can help your clients make evidence-informed decisions and create optimal pelvic health. In addition, strategies for preventing pelvic organ prolapse and promoting pelvic health through the perinatal period will also be covered.

Abstract:View Full Presentation InformationBirth is a highly feeling, life-altering experience for families and when difficulties arise, it is possible for events to cause a trauma response. As we build self-awareness as professionals, we are able to learn how to fully attune to our clients, offering openness and curiosity into pregnancy, birth and beyond. In the perinatal period, practitioners must use intuition and critical thinking to make rapid decisions even when time is limited and communication is difficult, sometimes resulting in a rupture in the therapeutic relationship. When things don’t go as planned, there can be words left unspoken, creating a loss of trust in the relationship and healthcare system as a whole. It is up to health professionals to repair these relationships, taking ownership of any misunderstandings, offering debriefing when possible, and taking time to reflect on their own triggers, fears and biases when working with clients. In this presentation, we will review some common factors involved when parents feel unsupported during the birth process, why rupture and repair in relationships and nervous system regulation is so important during the birthing process, and what these clients may require in these situations to feel safe in relationship with the midwifery team.
