Abstract:
For LGBTQ+ people looking to have a family, there are multiple barriers to care that people experience (logistically, financially, legally, and emotionally), and they often face a dizzying array of choices and decisions that can be challenging to navigate. LGBTQ+ people also face discrimination in the healthcare system and a lack of access to information on their options for becoming parents. The vast majority of providers have a lack of understanding of the landscape of LGBTQ+ family building options and how to appropriately guide their patients and support their decision making. This presentation will include information on supporting LGBTQ+ people through fertility choices, finding affirming providers throughout pregnancy, specifics for supporting transmasculine people through pregnancy and birth, and lactation support relevant to this population. Attendees will receive guidance on appropriate referral sources and culturally sensitive resources to share with the LGBTQ+ community.
