Abstract:
While Intermittent Auscultation (IA) is widely recommended, its application in practice can be complex, particularly in environments where continuous CTG monitoring is dominant and confidence in IA interpretation varies.Building on foundational knowledge, this presentation will explore the evidence underpinning intermittent auscultation, alongside emerging insights from fetal physiology that enhance understanding of fetal heart rate patterns. Participants will develop a more nuanced approach to interpreting findings and responding appropriately.Attendees will be introduced to eight physiology-informed strategies to elevate their IA practice. These will be examined in relation to current guidelines, supporting midwives to integrate evidence with clinical judgment in a way that is both safe and individualized. The session will also address persistent systemic and cultural barriers that can limit the use of IA, with a focus on practical, actionable approaches to strengthening advocacy, confidence, and woman-centred care across clinical settings.
