Abstract:
Women of refugee backgrounds living in high-income countries continue to experience worse perinatal outcomes when compared to women born in high-income countries. The inequitable outcomes are often associated with services that are unresponsive to women’s psychosocial and cultural needs. Unmet care needs may lead to women’s reduced access to and engagement with care, resulting in late detection and management of pregnancy complications. While caseload midwifery models are recommended they are infrequently implemented for women of refugee backgrounds.
This session will equip midwives with knowledge and skills of the vital elements necessary for implementing caseload midwifery models for women of refugee backgrounds. Learn more the key issues that women face when seeking care, the value of continuity of midwifery carer in promoting health equity and quality midwifery care that promotes women's access to and engagement with care. The session will conclude by advocating for the replication of caseload midwifery models as key interventions for improving positive experiences and perinatal outcomes for women of refugee backgrounds in high-income countries.
