Abstract:

Point-of-care maternal ultrasound has become an essential tool in modern midwifery practice, enhancing clinical decision-making and improving patient outcomes. This presentation introduces the foundational principles of maternal ultrasound, focusing on safe, effective, and practical applications for midwives. Key topics include basic ultrasound physics, image acquisition, and interpretation of normal maternal pelvic anatomy in early and mid-pregnancy.
Participants will gain an understanding of how to identify intrauterine pregnancy, assess fetal viability, estimate gestational age, and recognize common abnormalities that warrant further evaluation or referral. Emphasis will be placed on integrating ultrasound findings with clinical assessment while maintaining awareness of scope of practice and limitations.
The session also highlights best practices for patient communication, documentation, and risk reduction when incorporating ultrasound into midwifery care. Through a combination of didactic instruction and case-based examples, attendees will build confidence in using ultrasound as a supportive diagnostic adjunct.
This presentation is designed for midwives seeking to develop or strengthen their foundational ultrasound skills in a way that promotes safe, patient-centered care.
