Abstract:

This session provides a practical, case-based overview of the management of Rh(D)-negative and alloimmunized pregnancies, with a focus on preventing and recognizing hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). Learn more about the pathophysiology and clinical impact of HDFN, including differences between Rh(D) and non-Rh(D) antibodies. The key transfusion tests used in pregnancy, including group and screen, antibody identification and titration, and fetomaternal hemorrhage (FMH) testing, with an emphasis on appropriate timing and interpretation, will also be reviewed.Participants will dive deeper into the role of Rh immune globulin (RhIg), including routine antenatal and postpartum use, management of sensitizing events, and evolving recommendations in practice. Emerging tools such as cell-free fetal DNA testing will also be introduced in the context of future care. Finally, the session will address neonatal evaluation, including cord blood testing and postpartum management. Clinical vignettes will be used throughout to provide practical, real-world application.
