Hyperemesis Gravidarum: New Research and Emerging Treatment Approaches

Abstract:

Recent advances in hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) research are transforming understanding of this often misunderstood pregnancy disease. Historically, research and clinical practice focused on pregnancy hormones or mental health issues to explain the severe symptoms. However, HG is now increasingly recognized as a biologically driven condition with important genetic contributors that are also strongly influenced by the care patients receive. This presentation will review emerging evidence on the role of growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) and other important genetic findings in the pathogenesis of HG, along with how these discoveries may influence future screening, risk assessment, and individualized treatment approaches.
In addition to reviewing current pathophysiologic models, the presentation will discuss evolving therapeutic strategies, cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, and recent literature on treatments that may improve clinical outcomes. Practical implications for midwives and maternity care clinicians will be emphasized, including early recognition of severe disease, prevention of complications, nutrition and hydration support, and evidence-based management across care settings.
Attendees will gain an updated understanding of current HG research and its implications for providing effective, compassionate care for patients across the continuum of the HG journey, from preconception through postpartum.
