Abstract:
Late-preterm infants often look mature, yet their feeding skills and physiologic reserves are still developing. This presentation will explore the unique breastfeeding challenges faced by late-preterm dyads including sleepy feeding behavior, ineffective milk transfer, slow weight gain, and the need for close clinical follow-up. It will also highlight why human milk and direct breastfeeding are especially important in this population, supporting immunologic protection, gut development, and optimal neurodevelopment during a vulnerable period of transition. This session will connect the science of late-preterm infant vulnerability with practical strategies for assessment, feeding support, and parent education. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of how to recognize feeding risk early, preserve breastfeeding whenever possible, and communicate the value of direct breastfeeding in a way that is both clinically grounded and supportive of families.
