Abstract:
The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into global healthcare infrastructure presents both unprecedented opportunities and profound ethical challenges for the midwifery profession. Historically anchored in a philosophy of holistic, person-centered care, physiological birth promotion, and continuous emotional presence, midwifery must now interface with data-driven technologies. This presentation provides an objective, evidence-based overview of the contemporary AI landscape within perinatal care, specifically tailored for clinicians navigating these digital advancements. We will explore current and emerging applications of AI, including predictive analytics for obstetric risk stratification, automated clinical documentation, and machine-learning tools for fetal heart rate monitoring. Concurrently, a critical evaluation of the benefits—such as reduced administrative burdens and enhanced diagnostic support—will be balanced against inherent risks, including algorithmic bias, data privacy vulnerabilities, and the potential erosion of the therapeutic clinician-client relationship. Finally, this session establishes a robust framework for the ethical application of AI, ensuring that digital tools serve to augment, rather than replace, clinical intuition and midwifery philosophy. Attendees will gain the foundational knowledge necessary to critically evaluate, ethically implement, and safely direct digital innovations within their respective clinical frameworks.
